چکیده

INTRODUCTION Rock climbing is becoming both accessible and popular amongst a broader population base [1]. This increasing participation has been matched by an increasing injury rate, particularly injuries to the distal upper extremity [2]. The most common climbing injuries occur in the finger flexor tendon pulleys, which can be overloaded to failure by acute excessive force in compromised finger postures [3]. Despite this risk, little is known about either variety or consistency of hand postures employed in climbing [4]. The purpose of this study was to qualify hand posture behaviours and force production amongst expert rock climbers.

Expertise affects representation structure and categorical activation of grasp postures in climbing

In indoor rock climbing, the perception of object properties and the adequate execution of grasping actions highly determine climbers' performance. In two consecutive experiments, effects of climbing expertise on the cognitive activation of grasping actions following the presentation of climbing holds was investigated. Experiment 1 evaluated the representation of climbing holds in the long-term...

3D analysis of the body center of mass in rock climbing.

The purpose of the present study was to search for common patterns and for differences in climbing strategies in a group of recreational climbers. Twelve participants were involved in the study. Each participant climbed a simple indoor route consisting of a 3m horizontal shift followed by a 3m ascent for five times. Climbers could choose their own style, their preferred speed and holds. Their m...

Environmental Design Shapes Perceptual-motor Exploration, Learning, and Transfer in Climbing

This study investigated how environmental design shapes perceptual-motor exploration, when meta-stable regions of performance are created. Here, we examined how creating meta-stable regions of performance could destabilize pre-existing skills, favoring greater exploration of performance environments, exemplified in this study by climbing surfaces. In this investigation we manipulated hold orien...

Memory for the functional characteristics of climbing walls: perceiving affordances.

In 2 experiments, differences in visual perception of climbing routes (route finding) between 7 expert climbers, 4 novices, and 9 inexperienced participants were studied. In both experiments, participants reproduced on a scale model the locations and orientations of 23 holds of a climbing wall. The results showed that the expert climbers recalled more information and recalled clusters of inform...

The Effect of Climbing Ability and Slope Inclination on Vertical Foot Loading Using a Novel Force Sensor Instrumentation System

The aim of the study was to assess the effects of climbing ability and slope inclination on vertical loading both in terms the forces involved and physiological responses. Five novice and six intermediate female climbers completed a climbing route at three slope inclinations (85°, 90°, and 98°). The vertical loading during the climb was assessed by force-time integral using a Novel Pedar-X inso...
